Defrost the Refrigerator Perfectly

Advice and tips on how to do it well

Before winter comes, while the days are not yet cold and dark, there is one thing that you can do for your refrigerator and freezer: defrost them.

If you do not have a no-frost self-defrosting model, ice and frost can become a tiresome enemy.

We would advise you to defrost your appliance at least three times a year, possibly with the changing of the seasons.

When you need to defrost it
If you do not have a no-frost self-defrosting model, ice and frost can become a tiresome enemy which, over time, may lead to malfunctioning and increased energy consumption.

If this sounds familiar to you, we would advise you to defrost your appliance at least three times a year, possibly with the changing of the seasons.
How to do it
-Remove all food from the refrigerator; throw away any products past their “Use by” date and place any which can still be used in another refrigerator (or cool bag);

-Switch off the refrigerator by unplugging it and lay some cloths or towels (or even a bowl) on the floor;

-Wait for approximately one hour, to let the ice and frost dissolve completely;
-Use a cloth or sponge to dry the water which has collected as the ice has dissolved; if it has not completely dissolved, use a spatula to break it off or place a container full of hot water inside the appliance;
-Remove all shelves, lids and accessories from the refrigerator and wash them by hand or in the dishwasher on a low temperature setting;
-Prepare a bowl of water and baking soda or white wine vinegar; clean the inner walls of the appliance, rinse and dry thoroughly;
-Put the food back in the refrigerator and switch it back on.
What not to do
Do not use chemicals to make the ice dissolve faster (unless advised to use specific products by the manufacturer) as doing so could cause plastic parts to disintegrate, causing a health hazard.
By the same token, do not use implements such as knives or scissors; only use tools which have been specifically designed for this purpose.
Although they are the instruments most often used to dissolve frost and ice, hairdryers and other electrical equipment should not be used. Your safety is at stake.
Once you have finished the defrosting process, switch on the refrigerator and freezer again but on a higher power setting.
This will help you avoid putting food back inside while the surfaces are still warm.
After at least an hour or so, you will be able to turn the knob back to its usual setting.
